Humanitarian Medical Expedition Kenya 2024
ABOUT THE EXPEDITION
We are a group of young doctors who, following the completion of our studies in January 2024, embarked on a humanitarian medical mission to the small village of Majiwa in Kenya. This expedition was conducted under the auspices of the Slovenian section for tropical medicine. Six months prior to our departure, we began intensive preparations, collecting material and financial resources. It was necessary to procure medical supplies that would suffice for three months of clinic operation. Sounds quite challenging, doesn't it? Yet, with unwavering determination and the generous support of compassionate individuals, we succeeded in crafting an inspiring tale.
ASSISTANCE FROM SONAR, D.O.O.
For some time now, discussions have been ongoing among expedition organizers heading to Kenya regarding the critical need for an ultrasound machine at the clinic in Majiwa. Diagnostic capabilities at the clinic are severely lacking, and referrals to better-equipped facilities are often financially out of reach for many patients. Introducing an ultrasound machine would significantly improve both patient care and diagnostic accuracy. Despite the collective efforts of all involved, this need remained unmet by the time of our departure.
Recognizing the power of word-of-mouth, we reached out to Sonar, Ltd., who generously offered to lend us their cutting-edge portable handheld ultrasound device - the Vscan Air™ handheld ultrasound. Thus, on January 11, 2024, we commenced our work at the clinic in Majiwa, with the borrowed ultrasound machine serving as a vital diagnostic tool for our team.
DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURES CONDUCTED WITH Vscan Air™
During our mission in Majiwa, we utilized the Vscan Air™ handheld ultrasound device to perform a wide range of diagnostic procedures. This innovative technology allowed us to conduct thorough examinations and assessments, providing invaluable insights into the health conditions of our patients.
With the Vscan Air™, we were able to perform quick and accurate assessments of various medical issues. The portability and ease of use of the device were particularly beneficial in our resource-limited setting, enabling us to bring advanced diagnostic capabilities directly to the patients who needed them most.
In Majiwa, Kenya, chronic diseases are quite similar to those in European countries, but they are often less treated - such as arterial hypertension and diabetes. To address this, we conducted quick heart examinations, assessed heart failure, and evaluated the filling of the vena cava using the ultrasound device.
Due to the high incidence of malaria, we encountered numerous cases of hepatosplenomegaly, which we qualitatively assessed using ultrasound. We also used the abdominal probe several times to examine pregnant women.
We frequently utilized the linear probe, particularly for diagnosing pleural effusions in cases of heart failure and assisting in diagnosing pneumonia. Additionally, although less frequently, we used it to rule out deep vein thrombosis.
Thanks to the support of Sonar, D.O.O. and the provision of the Vscan Air™, we were able to significantly enhance our diagnostic capabilities at the clinic in Majiwa, ultimately improving patient care and outcomes.
